The Shore is a daughter church plant of Northwest Christian Church here in Decatur. Like any church we have experienced various ups and downs through the years but God has remained faithful and continued a good work here in South Shores. Today we look forward to "Riding the Wave" that God has created in the South Shores area and we are so excited about how God is moving in our neighborhood through His people while creating true life change and transformation in lives.

We are an independent, non-denominational church that shares a heritage with other churches going by the name of Christian Churches/Churches of Christ with the Restoration Movement. Below is a brief outline of core principles of Restoration Movement and Christian Churches.

What Are “Christian Churches?”

We are homegrown.  Most denominations have their roots overseas.  That is, they were started in Europe and came to America through immigrants who were members of a particular denomination.  Not so with Christian Churches.  We were started by people in the U.S. from various denominations who began a movement to end denominational divisions and unite around Christ and the Bible.

“May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me.” John 17:23

The Bible is our sole authority.  Christian Churches have avoided man-made creeds, doctrinal statements, and hierarchies, and use the Bible alone for guidance in matters of doctrine and practice.  We have adopted slogans, such as: “No book but the Bible, no creed but Christ.”

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting,  and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  2 Timothy 3:16-17

We focus on unity.  Denominational labels tend to divide the Body of Christ.  Christian Churches seek to unite God’s people through rejecting man-devised names and divisions and adopting a simple, biblical name for our churches—Christian.  Another slogan we use is: “We’re Christians only, not the only Christians.”

We are an independent church. Every Christian Church is completely independent.  There is no denominational control or hierarchy, as in most denominational churches.  Each church is self-governed and determines its own affairs.  For example, at The Shore we choose our own staff, we own our buildings and assets, we determine our own programs, and we select our own missionaries and agencies to support.
